We had to facilitate an amazing training session on March 12, 2025 with some 25 students and their club coordinators of the Health, Environmental, and the Red Cross Clubs of Government Bilingual High School, Genie Militaire, Douala, thanks to the Global Teacher Grant, funded by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and implemented by the amazing Fulbright TEA alumna, Ndolo Lydia. The training aimed at creating an in-depth awareness on the proper washing of hands using soap over hand sanitizer.

It should be noted that, in today’s busy world, where our hands are constantly scrolling, typing, and multitasking, have you ever stopped to wonder what else they’re carrying? The reality is that improper handwashing remains one of the easiest ways germs hitch a ride into our lives—and our connected 21st-century lifestyle amplifies the risks. Let’s talk about why handwashing is still a game-changer (and how to do it right)!
When was the last time you thoroughly and properly washed your hands? Be honest! Was it after you got home, after handling your phone (germ magnets, anyone?), or before eating?

Are you aware that there are germs everywhere—on public transport, market produce, grocery carts, or even just touching your face (which we do 23 times an hour on average!)?
Skipping proper handwashing leads to illnesses like the flu, food poisoning, or even more serious diseases. But you can stop germs in their tracks with these 5 great and simple steps:
• Wet Your Hands: Use clean running water to get started.
• Lather Up: Use soap and cover all areas—between your fingers, under your nails, the works!
• Scrub for 20 Seconds: Sing your favorite song chorus while scrubbing. (What’s your go-to handwashing anthem? Share it in the comments section!)
• Rinse Away: Wash off all the soap under running water.
• Dry Thoroughly: Use a clean towel or air dry those hands.

Make it a habit to wash your hands before eating, after using public spaces, or when you get home. You’d be amazed how much this little act can protect your health, and that of those around you.
Did you know? Proper handwashing can reduce respiratory infections by up to 20% and prevent countless other illnesses! It's not just about personal hygiene- it's about safeguarding your family, friends, and community.
In a world where we're more interconnected than ever, every clean hand contributes to a healthier, happier planet. So, next time you wash your hands, remember: you're not just scrubbing away germs; you're also creating ripple effects of well-being.

Let’s spread the word, not the germs!
Share this with someone who could use a little clean inspiration!
