Culture Shock: A Passport to Global Citizenship

Every challenge is an opportunity for growth. On February 06, 2025, I participated in a mindblowing session with Whitney Hough, the Deputy Director in charge of Fulbright Teaching Exchanges at IREX, who shared how her life, filled with constant travel and new cultural encounters became the foundation for her journey toward global citizenship.

Growing up in a military home where she had to change country at least once every two to three years,  Whitney experienced diverse cultures which shaped her global perspective “Culture shock is like a roller coaster,” she explained, recalling the highs of excitement and the lows of adjustment that come with every new environment. She carried us through the heart of bustling markets, and quiet streets in far-off cities, and those bittersweet moments when returning home felt different from before.

Whitney reminded us that every unfamiliar experience offers a chance to learn. She recounted a time when she moved to a new country where the food, language, and social norms were completely different from what she was used to. At first, she felt lost, until she started engaging with locals, asking questions, and immersing herself in the culture.

Her story wasn’t just about adapting; it was about transforming. Every moment of discomfort becomes a stepping stone toward deeper self-understanding and empathy for others. She realized that global citizenship isn’t just about traveling, it’s about embracing diversity and finding common ground with people from all walks of life.

Whitney’s journey encourages us to see every challenge as an opportunity for growth, making us better global citizens. “Always keep an open mind, there is always something to learn,” she urged, challenging us to welcome new perspectives even when they push us out of our comfort zones.

“You belong here just as much as anyone else.” Remember these words whenever you feel overwhelmed by the unexpected, we invite you to join us in turning culture shock into a catalyst for growth and global change.

Embrace change, explore new horizons, and let every experience shape your journey toward a more connected world.
