STEM teachers once more had another opportunity in a one-day Professional Development training of 50 STEM teachers as part of the digitalization process in the Cameroonian Educational system on Monday the 5th of February 2024. It was a rare moment for teachers of Science and Maths to learn more about Open Educational Resources and to discover open resources such as PhET Interactive simulations and LabXchange. The theme of the one-day workshop centred around “STEM and Open Technology: Advancing the Teaching and Learning of STEM while integrating PhET Interactive simulations.”
In the process of advancing STEM teaching and Learning in the phase of digitalization, this face-to-face training session kick-started in the central region of the country. It was jointly organized by the Cameroon Fulbright TEA Alumni Association (CAFTAL) and Innovators Education Hub (IEH) and was held at the premises of the MINESEC Distance Education Centre with nineteen science and mathematics teachers who were marked present.
This rare moment was baptized by the Assistant Director of the centre, Mr. Janvier, who congratulated all the participants for making out time to become better professionals in the teaching core and who will one day replace the ageing population.
Also, during the training session, we had an interesting question and answer session through Zoom chat which was facilitated by one of the PhET Ambassadors, Rebecca Vieyra, directly from the University of Colorado - Boulder, who cleared some doubts on how inclusive the simulations are and the relationship between PhET and LabXchange.

At the end of the training, the participants were enriched with aspects such as making informed decisions, making citations correctly, identifying and choosing OER, locating and interacting with PhET simulations and LabXchange and most especially designing a STEM lesson while integrating PhET simulations through Logic Model Lesson plans.

It is worth noting that the dynamic facets of 21st-century learning and learners can only be possible through letting those who make it happen be exposed to Continuous Professional Development. CAFTAL and IEH made this happen last Monday the 5th of February by bringing and introducing PhET Interactive simulations to the doorsteps of some 19 STEM teachers in the centre region of Cameroon. Dip hands-on activities were carried out by participants and they showed great interest and engagement in them.
Therefore, to become the best tutor you can be, my advice to teachers is to continue learning by taking teacher training, attending conferences and workshops like this one, join a Community of Practice and don’t hesitate to read relevant blogs since new techniques and ideas are constantly developed in the world of teaching.
